Red
Spruce [Soundboard]
Generally considered to be the ultimate tonewood for braces
and soundboards, Red or "Adirondack" spruce was used
on the legendary pre-war Martin and Gibson guitars and is largely
acknowledged as the main contributing factor to the legacy and
reputation of these instruments.
Red spruce is exceptionally strong and stiff, with the highest
cross sectional and across the grain strength of all the spruces.
This translates into a soundboard that offers all of the most
desirable attributes a tonewood can posess: clarity, projection,
tonal complexity, warmth, and volume.
Although diminished consistency and availablity curtailed its
use after WWII, Red spruce is now becoming available in limited
quantities. We have an excellent supply of tops that match the
quality of the pre-war Martin D-28's.
